You can make it into a bloodrune and then give it to the archaeologist and it can tell you what look it gives.

I think they might shift depending on the moon phase! @Haliste was cryptic!

Shift to a different moon or shift appearance based on the moon's phase? either way i'm trying to get one for futher study. Do we have an idea of how many of each there are?

Yes, it randomly changes, not really sure if there is a trigger or its on a random timer.
